Hippie Goddesses

Since there is such a massive hippie, '60s and '70s vibe in fashion this season, I thought I'd provide us all with a little original inspiration. Prepare yourself for some awesome pictures.

Style Icon: Debbie Harry of Blondie

Debbie Harry's Wikipedia page tells me she grew up in New Jersey, was once a Playboy bunny and named her band Blondie because it's what construction workers would often yell at her. As in, "Hey, Blondie! Over here!"
I love how she stumbles around on stage during the music video for Heart of Glass and of course the fact that she was in with Andy Warhol. I also love her awesome, unique, early '70s disco/punk style. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the style highlights of Debbie Harry aka Blondie.

Do you think Daphne Guinness got the idea for her blonde/black hair from Debbie?

Gucci Spring '07

Just because I want to stare at these dresses forever - here is one of my favourite recent collections Gucci spring/summer '07.

This collection appeals to me to no end. I have never forgotten about it and I doubt I will any time soon. Maybe one day I will be able to buy a 'vintage' dress from this season. Specifically I would like the one on the far right above.

What about you? Do you have that one special collection that forever stands out in your mind? One that you love so much you would buy every look if you could? I wouldn't mind if I had nothing in my closet but these!

What I'll be wearing on the hottest day of the year...

Playing in my closet this weekend I came up with an outfit I can't wait to wear once it's warm enough out. Have I mentioned I am very excited for summer?

This skirt is super lightweight with lines of beading that make it kind of uncomfortable to sit on, but I still love it. I bought the paisley bag at a garage sale from an old lady for a dollar. The wood bracelet is from the Richmond Night Market (another reason I can't wait for summer!) and I put my gladiators and moccassins in the picture because I can see wearing this outfit with sandals during the day and the boots at night. On top are simple layered white tanks. Of course, underneath will be my bikini because I will be headed to the beach!

Blurry but I like it

Today's Outfit: Polyvore version

I keep forgetting to take pictures of my outfit when I leave in the morning and then by the time I come home I feel like a mess and I don't want to take photos. So, creating a version of my look on polyvore is a pretty good solution.

This is what I'm wearing right now. I always feel awesome when I wear my moccasin boots.

Vintage Thursday

V. and I made a long-awaited trip to our favourite Value Village yesterday. We've been trying to get it together to go for the last 3 weeks.
I went with a list and some mental images of what I wanted to find. This is always a terrible idea when it comes to vintage shopping. You really need to go with a clear head, a lot of time to waste and no preconceptions about what you want to buy. Otherwise, you will be dissapointed because you really can never know what you will find.

I got a pile of long, beaded necklaces of various types for $1.99 each. I've been looking for some extra-long ropes of 'pearls' to wear '20s-style with party dresses. That dream can now come true.

I found this Ralph Lauren plaid flannel shirt which I intend to wear possibly belted and tucked into a black pencil skirt. I've been waiting for the perfect plaid to come along, and this one is pretty ideal, even if it's too big and has a little hole in the back. It cost maybe $4.

I also bought this extra-long, oversize grey knit sweater which I'm wearing right now. It's the perfect length to be slouchy-elegant. It was $6 I think.

All in all, not the best vintage haul ever, but pretty a good shopping day. V. bought a great red and white striped cardigan that is very Chanel SS08; I'll have to take a picture for you guys when I see her wearing it. V. I know you're reading this and I forgot to tell you, wear that cardigan with something navy blue underneath (ideally covered in white stars) like so:

100th post!

I only started this blog last November so I can't believe I am already writing my 100th post! To celebrate, here is a photo with so much attitude and style that it really needs no explanation.

Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton

Last night I watched the documentary Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton which follows Marc during the design process for both fashion houses. I am not surprised to learn it was made by the same filmmaker as Signe Chanel, which followed Karl Lagerfeld, as the style of these two documentaries was very similar.
What was very different was the design process of the two men. Karl seems completely disconnected from the dirty work of fashion; only present in the atelier to deliver his sketches and reprimand his seamstresses. While Marc Jacobs is the opposite; sitting on the floor to cut fabric, pinning and draping and re-pinning designs right on the fit model's body and sitting for hours in silence with his design team waitng for inspiration.
It was interesting to have a look into Jacobs' world as he is quite a character. He seems to eat protein bars exclusively. Superstition says that the design meetings are haunted by fairies. Marc has a love of creating controlled chaos. The executives at Louis Vuitton are like his party-pooping parents who must reign-in their prized, first son.
All in all, the film was an interesting look into the fashion world, and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning what it's like behind the closed doors of ateliers.

Street Fashion: Transitional Dressing

V. has a natural ability to put cool outfits together. Here, she demonstrates how to deal with the erratic early Spring weather we have in Vancouver.

This is what you wear when the weather fluctuates from sunny, warm, blue skies to freezing rain in the span of a day. Oh, Vancouver, you tease us so. All I can think about lately is going to the beach! Hurry up Summer!

ANTM: Tyra, This Time You Went Too Far

I know that by now this has probably already been discussed all over the blogosphere; but just a quick note on this week's America's Next Top Model Episode. Tyra had the girls pose in clothing made of actual raw meat inside a giant walk-in freezer full of more meat. Some girls had to wear meat panties. Yes, seriously.

There are a number of things I see terribly wrong with this whole scenario.
1) The obvious ick factor. This is just plain disgusting for the girls. Having to wear raw meat? Come on. I know you like to freak out the models, Tyra, but maybe you should stick to having them pose with spiders and snakes. You know, live animals? I hope they had showers on-site! I wouldn't want to put my own clothes on after this.
2) As a vegetarian and animal lover, I am just extra disgusted by this waste of animal's lives. Why not go all the way and have them pose in fur? Oh wait, that already happened in past cycles.
3) There are not only people starving all over the world, but probably also right outside the doors of that warehouse on the street. What a collosal display of first world wastefullness this photo shoot was.
I really wish fashion wasn't such a dirty business.

Seasonal Dressing: Just A State of Mind?

With all the magazine editorials and fashion blogs (the professional ones anyway) talking about bright colours and florals for spring (as they do every year along with nautical, safari and this weird idea of 'sporty') you can get a bit overwhelmed after being used to months and months of dreary weather and even drearier colours.

I used to wear a lot of bright colours, no matter the season, but the last few years I've gravitated much more towards browns, greys, black and neutrals. Maybe part of getting 'older' and 'more mature' is having your style also become more mature and sophisticated; but really those are the last words I would ever use to describe myself or my style. I am way too messy and disorganized to be anything like sophisticated; but I digress.

Now that it's Spring, I don't really feel the need to totally overhaul my style into something seasonally appropriate. I'll still wear my black dresses; but replace the leggings, tights and boots with bare legs and sandals or flats. I'll do the florals trend with vintage small-floral-print dresses on dark backgrounds or through my accessories. I am no trend-whore, but I do like to be somewhat current. I believe in wearing out the things I love until they fall apart. Not pushing them aside when Vogue tells me I'm 'out.' I don't understand this obsession with having the newest, latest and greatest because it's really just another way to force our consumerism, season after season.

I would say my style is a mix of hippie, rocker and girly girl; which reflects my beliefs and personality more than anything. This basically doesn't change. With that in mind, here is some Spring dressing inspiration I am digging.

Vintage Shoes

A couple of really cool pairs of shoes my friends were wearing at a party last week.

The orange ones are from the '80s and were found vintage shopping. The burgandy previously belonged to another friend of ours; she bought them in grade 7!

Today's Outfit: Or Last Thursday's?

Okay, I was taking a guess about when I actually wore this outfit...but it was definitely last week...or maybe the week before. Anyway, it was a really warm day so I wore my new blazer and these amazing vintage brogues.

The weather we're having in Vancouver lately is perfect for great dressing. Still a little chilly so you can layer a lot, but no huge winter coat reqiured.

I've noticed that, no matter how much America's Next Top Model I watch, I can't seem to pose well for these ridiculous outfit shots.

More Inspiration

Oh god, I can't remember what magazine this shot is from but I do know the scan is from the fashion box. I just like it because of the styling and the AA leggings (although these are probably from The Row or Kova & T) which I wear pretty often these days. Just some Wednesday afternoon eye candy.

Fringe boots!

I recently saw some really cute ankle boots on sale at Aldo and almost bought them, then didn't. Now I'm regretting it because they were pretty perfect for me; with a low, wedge heel, a round toe and a subtle bow at the side. I doubt they would still have them in the store, so I took a look at the Aldo website to see if they had them there. While looking, I came across these amazing fringed boots.
Maybe since I've been wearing my moccasins a lot lately, I've been desensitized to fringe and I've gone past cool and off into the realm of tacky. Although I did see some awesome fringed boots over at Style Bytes so I'm not alone.

Okay, I just went back to the page to get a link and realized they've only got these left in a size 5. No wonder they were on sale for 1/3 of the original price. If you've got tiny feet, maybe you can get these amazing boots. The rest of us can just ogle.
I guess I'll return to looking for those ankle boots.
