You Win Some...

It's probably a good thing that I lost the eBay auction for this vintage dress. I am in love with it, but it is almost the holidays and I need to start spending money on others, not more on myself.

I had big plans to shorten it into a mini-dress and wear it with a belt, boots and a leather jacket.

Oh well. Maybe I should just try to sew something similar.

Shoe Board

I started out looking at boots.

Then of course I had to start looking at shoes too. Ridiculously high and beautiful ones that I would never wear in real life.

Eventually, things just got completely out of hand.

Oddly Obsessed With? Icy Colours

Last night, I was browsing Anthropologie's website after seeing this amazing coat from them on Liebemarlene Vintage. Anthropologie is one of those stores that I love but won't buy anything from in the foreseeable future as it is all overpriced and unavailable in Canada. It is all really, really lovely though.

I found that while looking through their site, I was mainly drawn to items in icy blues, greens and turquoise pastels. Colours I would normally never think of. I'm not sure if they can quite be called pastel either, they are a little too saturated to be easter egg-worthy. That could be my biased judgement though, as the mere mention of 'pastel' sends a little shudder of disgust through me. These are colours that I see as wintry and icy rather than the normal connotations of pastel.

Later, I remembered that I do have one piece in this kind of colour. A pale, minty-green slip dress from Urban Outfitters that is one of my favourite items of clothing. However, I am not short enough to wear it as a dress, which annoys me endlessly, as it is one of those things I often pull out of my closet just to look at or try on with various outfits.

Here are a few adorable pictures of Chictopia member Kora wearing the dress/shirt. The colour doesn't really show up correctly in these photos, but you get an idea of why I love this piece. She must be pretty short to pull it off like this. I am 5'7" and it barely covers my bum.

Edit: The girl who writes Sea of Shoes also has this UO dress. It's long enough to be a dress on her too. Did I just accidentally buy one that was made incorrectly and is not as long as it's supposed to be? Argh.

Message To Vancouverites

Don't forget to vote in the municipal elections today! These are the politicians who actually make the decisions that effect your lives. It's important. If you don't know where to vote find out here.

Also, if you don't know who to vote for (for mayor anyway) allow me to suggest you pick Mr. Happy Planet himself, Gregor Robertson. He is the only candidate willing to address our cities enormous homelessness problem and he is about as green as a politician gets.

Please go vote!

Update: Yes!

Currently Obsessed With: Early '60s Fashion

Blame it on the start of the rainy season (rainy season in Vancouver = the next 7 months at least) but I seem to be watching a ton of TV online lately. Two shows that I'm really into right now are Mad Men and American Dreams which both happen to take place in the early 1960's. The clothes on these shows are seriously amazing. It's crazy to me to think that my parents (who both graduated high school in 1962 - they had me late) were wearing these kinds of clothes since most of the pictures still around from their youth are a bit later and a lot more hippie.

American Dreams is a seriously cheesy show but it's kind of like the greatest indulgence ever for anyone, like me, who feels deeply that they are living in the wrong era. The clothes are typical of what people were wearing in middle America at the time. Lots of plaid skirts, tight cardigans, penny loafers, thick eyeliner, big hair, and form-fitting dresses. Don't be too surprised if I start dressing like this soon.

Mad Men is a great show (seriously, if you haven't yet, go watch it) which takes place in Manhattan at around the same time. The clothes are a lot more glamorous (especially on the 'city girls') and you can see the late '50s styles still lingering as well. I love how perfectly put-together many of the female characters are. With matching shoes, coats, hats and jewels for every outfit. They are at a level of glamour which no longer exists. I can't imagine how exhausting it must have been for women to wear rollers in their hair every night and a full face of makeup each day, but seriously they make it look (almost) worth it.

The Michael Kors FW 08 collection shows us how to do early '60s glamour in a modern way. Although really, this to me, is a timeless look.

Like A Virgin

I really really love Halloween. Dressing up is always my favourite activity but you only get to be this ridiculous on Halloween. I went as early Madonna. Maybe half of this decision was based on the excuse to buy a black tutu/petticoat thing. My boyfriend went as a hipster (it was seriously hilarious) and won second place in a costume contest.
